Drug and Alcohol Awareness

Effective drug education is important because young people are faced with many influences to use both licit and illicit drugs.

Learning outcomes

  • Identify and name the most used drugs, their effects, and methods of use.
  • Understand why the children and young people we care for are vulnerable to substance misuse.
  • Understand the role that the foster carer plays in minimising the risks associated with drug use.
  • Improve carers’ confidence in discussing drug and alcohol use, with the children and young people in their lives.
  • Gain an understanding of Child Criminal Exploitation, looking at County Lines, Forced Labour/Modern Slavery, re cultivation of cannabis and gangs, drugs, and guns.

Description

This learning course aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to address the complex issue of drug and alcohol use among young people.

Through this course, participants will delve into the reasons why young individuals under their care may be susceptible to drug use, considering various factors such as peer pressure, social environments, and emotional well-being. By grasping the underlying causes, participants can implement appropriate measures to minimize the risks associated with drug use among the children and young people they support.

By the end of this course, participants will have gained valuable knowledge and skills to effectively address drug use among young people. Equipped with an understanding of commonly used drugs, their effects, and methods of use, professionals will be better prepared to protect and support the children and young people in their care.
